The Battle of the Giant Chairs

The Seat of Design

The Seat of Design is a 25-foot-tall structure crafted of stainless steel that’s designed to look like a steel chair. It resembles Emeco’s classic Navy Chair with a few slight deviations, like its steel mesh seat.

Installed in October 2002, the chair was designed by Robin Perkins and Selbert Perkins Design. You’ve seen their work before. Their designs adorn LAX (those giant, glowing pylons), Union Station, and the Port of Los Angeles.

The Seat of Design was intended to act as a recognizable landmark for the PDC, a deluxe outlet for high end home furnishings and design in West Hollywood. The chair sits directly in front of the “Blue Whale,” the nickname for the PDC’s most recognizable building, so called because of its large size and blue glass cladding.

For about one year, the Seat of Design was the largest chair in Los Angeles. But it was toppled when the Los Angeles Giant Chair was installed at L.A. Mart in South Central.

The Seat of Design accompanied by a 25-foot tall lamp, Illuminating Design, on the other end of the PDC.
